In Honor of America Recycles Day, New City Recycling Initiative Launched with Community Partners

November 15, 2016

District "C" Councilmember Nadine Ramsey
NEW ORLEANS - In honor of America Recycles Day, which is Tuesday, November 15th, local community partners have come together to launch a new initiative to increase recycling in the City. This initiative, which is supported by District "C" Councilmember Ramsey, Chair of the Committee on Public Works, Sanitation, and Environment. The initiative will help set goals for recycling improvement and track progress over time.

Community partners have come together to sponsor a workshop and tour of our local Republic Services Material Recycling Facility to help educate local business and community leaders about the economic advantages of recycling. Citizens and businesses are encouraged to claim they recycle or learn more about recycling by visiting: www.valuelouisiana.com.

WHAT:
Councilmember Ramsey and local community partners to sponsor a workshop and tour of local recycling facility to help educate local community leaders about the economic advantages of recycling

WHO:
Councilmember Ramsey, the City's Department of Sanitation, and the Sewage & Water Board, French Quarter Business Leaders such as the Steamboat Natchez, Cajun Encounters, and Latrobe's on Royal. Local recycling community leaders such as LifeCity, Republic Services, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Keep New Orleans Beautiful, the Green Project, Global Green, the New Orleans Chamber Foundation, Restoration Thrift and more.

WHY:
According to a recent assessment, New Orleans only recycles approximately 5 percent of its waste (eligible for pick-up by the City of New Orleans). This is not only a waste of natural resources but a missed economic opportunity: jobs and revenue generated by recycling. In honor of America Recycles Day, the City Council is providing a resolution to support increasing recycling in our community to create jobs, protect resources for future generations, support sustainable business development, and divert materials from landfills
